editing file for canvas printing
Producing high quality canvas prints requires good practices, knowledge and experience. Each part of our workflow is done manually - which is far superior to relying on automated processes. Multiple times we have been approached by companies offering website plugins which will prepare a customer's file for printing 'on-the-fly' in a matter of seconds. We have also seen results: that's why we believe in the human eye instead of a computer algorithm. Here is the outline of our work practices: 1. SIZE CHECK   Once the file is downloaded from our server we check whether it's quality is good enough for the chosen size. Our canvas order page does the initial, automated check - it simply reads the file header to find out it's size in pixels. It is then compared with the chosen size and if the effective (at print size) resolution is high enough, the website displays this information. In some cases, when the file has been upscaled or comes from a poor capturing device we contact the cus...

As this question comes up quite frequently I thought it may be a good idea to summarize the advice we normally give to the customers looking to print their artwork onto canvas (though the majority of this information is common to most other media types, as well). We need to start with the question of what type of artwork is to be printed. While preparing photos is relatively straightforward, artwork containing text, logos or other elements requires a different approach (especially when spot colours are involved). We can define artwork as two types: 'bitmaps' and 'vectors'. Bitmaps are all photographs taken by digital cameras, scanned images and any artwork which has been saved (or exported) as a bitmap.   BITMAPS Bitmaps are created on a pixel grid and have a set size in pixels, for example: a photo taken by an 8-Megapixel camera will have approx. 3264x2448 pixels. You can imagine a grid made out of pixels where each pixel can have a different colour. The ...

Right in the middle of the pre-Christmas rush we were asked by Robert Olliver-Jones, West Sussex artist if we could provide some canvasses to raise money for St Wilfrid's Hospice. Naturally we were very happy to help with such a great cause. Here are some images we have reproduced, more information can be found on Robert's website - http://robertolliverjones.co.uk     St Wilfrid's Hospice are celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year.  Since opening their doors to their first patient in January 1987, they have cared for over 11,000 local people and at any one time caring for around 200 people in the community, offering support to their families and friends.   All their services are provided free of charge and they are not a part of the NHS, relying on public support to raise 86% of their annual running costs, which this year will exceed £5.8 million. &n...

Wordle.net is a website dedicated to creating 'word cloud' images. This free service was created in 2008 by Jonathan Feinberg, and has been widely used ever since. As Jonathan explains on his website, he created the wordle code as personal project during his employment at IBM Research. Following arrangements between him and his former employer wordle remains completely free to use. Wordle images can be built through three different methods. 1. By going to the wordle homepage and clicking on the 'Create' tab you’ll be able to choose your text. You can enter your own text by typing or pasting content into the first box, which has the title 'Paste in a bunch of text', and then clicking on 'Go' to make a wordle. 2. If you’d like to copy the text from a website into a wordle image, choose the second option on the 'Create' page and enter a URL of your choice. 3. The final option lets you build an image with the tags of a...

I have noticed recently more and more overseas companies offering canvas products through .co.uk domains. It is a bit strange considering the fact that the canvasses are manufactured abroad and still need to be shipped from Germany/Netherlands and other European countries which obviously is quite costly. From studying the websites it is quite clear that products offerred are of a budget nature and would probably not attract quality conscious customers. I can use this opportunity to confirm that all our canvasses are printed, varnished and hand stretched in our offices in Hereford, UK. Also all materials used are bought through UK based companies. I strongly believe that in current economic climate it is important to support UK businesses rather than overseas ones. The other consideration is the carbon emissions associated with transporting goods at such a long distances. We don't personally make any efforts of advertising our services abroadfor this reason. However occasionally we ...

Following last week's installation of Epson 11880 printer we now increased our canvas prints sizes. We can now produce a maximum of 56x56" (approx. 140cm) square, or 56x90" rectangle (140cm x 230cm). We have decided to choose Epson widest printer because of its exceptional print quality and wide colour gamut. Designed for fine art & photography reproduction it is using Ultrachrome inkset with Vivid Magenta technology, with 4 different black ink types. Other technical advantages include quick processing of large files and auto take up reel. This printer also has got a new Auto Ink Droplet Detection System, which checks if printhead doesn't have clogged nozzles using small electrical charge, without the need to even print nozzle pattern. The effect - no cloggs should translate to perfect print every time.   Calibration process has been finished after printing over 9000 colour squares and measurement by our spectrophotometer. All colour profiles are now...

Many people are afraid of bringing vivid coluors into their interior decorating. It is difficult to get out of one’s comfort zone, so the result is a boring, mostly beige environment. But, colours are stimulating and refreshing. To find out what colours you would really enjoy in your living room or a bedroom, without risking an entire wall of paint you might hate, start with small touches of colour. The best way to test your taste in colour is with canvas prints.   You can choose one larger canvas print or two, four or even eight smaller ones, grouped together for stronger impact. Larger prints work very well over a fireplace or a desk. We can make you rolled or stretched canvas prints of up to 72 inches high and wide.  Smaller groups of canvas prints of different sizes can be placed above a sofa or a side table. The smallest prints we make are 6 inches high and 6 inches wide.   Choosing the right photo for your canvas print for your home is mostly ...

Latest Espon 9890 printers were launched in UK in January 2011. We always make sure to use latest technology in order to provide excelent products to our customers. Printers have arrived today and after initial calibration and test will be used for all new prints shortly. First differencies between our 'older' 9880 models are in size and weight but also - new printers are very quiet which is a nice change :) We are also very excited to be joining Epson's Digigraphie program in the near future. It is the installation of the latest 9890 models which allows to create prints which can achieve highest quality and can be signed as a Digigraphie.  There are simple rules that need to be followed to create Digigraphie: - the use of selected Epson printers using Ultrachrome TM inks, - using selected and certified media - prints must be authenticated, numbered, signed by the artist and also embossed with relief stamp.
