Wordle.net is a website dedicated to creating 'word cloud' images. This free service was created in 2008 by Jonathan Feinberg, and has been widely used ever since. As Jonathan explains on his website, he created the wordle code as personal project during his employment at IBM Research. Following arrangements between him and his former employer wordle remains completely free to use.

Wordle images can be built through three different methods.

1. By going to the wordle homepage and clicking on the 'Create' tab you’ll be able to choose your text. You can enter your own text by typing or pasting content into the first box, which has the title 'Paste in a bunch of text', and then clicking on 'Go' to make a wordle.

2. If you’d like to copy the text from a website into a wordle image, choose the second option on the 'Create' page and enter a URL of your choice.

3. The final option lets you build an image with the tags of a del.icio.us user just by entering their username. Once you’ve chosen your method, entered the appropriate information, and clicked 'Go' your text will be processed into a wordle, which you can further edit, print, or save. If you want to professionally print your wordle you must save it. After building a wordle and saving it to the gallery, or to your own computer, the rest is easy.

Ok, so let's go with option 1 and produce worlde from the text of this article. First I just select all of this text and copy it. Now go to wordle.net/create and paste it in the box.

After clicking 'Go' we do get a few additional options - layout, font, colour scheme. Few minutes later and after trying lots of combination I decided to rest with the following:

Example of wordle

Now the most important bit - how to get this file out so we can actually use it for prinitng onto canvas or poster. If you do have Adobe Acrobat pdf creator that will be the best option. It will virtually create a pdf file which consist of vector objects and can be scaled to any size. This option will be available after clicking 'Print'. If you do not have this option, it is not a problem - we can help. Simply send us the your wordle address (this is visible in the address bar, ours is http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/5367370/Untitled) and we will access it from our computers and create .pdf file which will produce best quality prints. We will only need a specific address (visible in your browser address bar) to identify your wordle. Once we have created a .pdf file we can proceed with creation a proof based on your required size/edge option. Please feel free to contact us if you need any help.

In 2009, wordle.net was used in a Kaimuki Public Library contest, and in 2010, the book Beautiful Visualization edited by Julie Steele and Noah Iliinsky featured a chapter on wordle. Its primary purpose is to create word images, so when you enter a block of text into the 'Create' section of the site, the frequently used words are made large, and all of your text is melded into a single image. From there, you can change the font, layout, and coloration of your new image until you find the combination that’s right for the text.

There are a lot of different ways to use the wordle website. For instance, teachers have assigned wordle clouds as homework, they can be used to make a poem more dynamic, or to present data in a new way. An image created on wordle can be imbedded into a blog or other site, and you can access wordles created by other users.

If you have a concept for a great wordle and go to the wordle site to create it, you may be frustrated by the options that are available to you. Perhaps you don’t want to put your wordle on a website but want to print it instead. Your home printer may not have the capacity to create posters, print high resolution images, or make canvas sized, quality images. That’s where we come in. We specialize in bringing your photos and other images to life, so ordering a canvas from our website is a great way to transfer your original wordle creations from the internet into your home.

Combining the creativity of wordle with the professional printing services we offer can have some amazing results. Make a room your own by creating a wordle cloud of your favorite song lyrics, quotes, or poems and printing them on a full sized canvas, giving you a whole new way to decorate while expressing your individuality and taste.
